So, a lot of you (and by “a lot,” I mean “none” ) have been asking me to post updates on my ray gun project. Here is a picture of how the gun looks right now:
First of all, let me say that the old adage “They don’t make ‘em like they used to,” could not have been more accurate in this case. This thing was a MONSTER to get apart. I mean it took the better part of 2 hours. Toys today fall once and they are demolished, while this thing stood up to 2 hours of me TRYING to break it, and it wouldn’t budge.
Second, now that its apart, I can’t figure out how the mechanism worked.
The white you see is standard Testors model putty. The gun was not deeply dented. In fact the only divots were minor from the rust and eventual rust removal (Done with a chemical called NAVAL JELLY and a wire brush). If there were any hardcore dents, I would have used BONDO or a similar item.
The grey is just primer. Basic Krylon hardware store brand. Putty / sand / primer / sand / putty / sand…. etc.. Until I was happy with the smoothness. Right now it looks awful, but its smooth and should be ready to paint soon!

If I added a Buy / Sell / Trade forum to the site for extra parts, sticker sheets, etc. Would you use it?
This is the first installment of a new series of posts I will be doing, showcasing top quality toy blogs and websites across the internet.
Doc Atomic’s Attic Of Astounding Artifacts is a site that every toy robot and ray gun collector should have at the top of their bookmarks. Run by the mysterious Doc Atomic (Nobody knows his real name, or where he earned his Ph.D) this blog is a treasure chest of fantastic information, as well as photos, interviews, and general reference to the vintage space toy community.
Doc’s site site was a real asset to me when I started collecting vintage ray guns last year. Not only is it always fun to browse another persons collection (especially one this amazing), but the doc is a triple threat in the sense that he is not only an excellent writer, he also has a gift for photography as well as web design.
Check him out if you have ever been interested in ray guns and robots, or if you just want to appreciate a world class collection owned by one of the best in the hobby!
